They created paintbrushes with natural materials like sticks, feathers, wheat, and shells, as well as with recycled materials like cardboard, recycled plastic bags and fabric. padding:0 15px;"> 					 						  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><font color="#2a2a2a"><font>by Madeline Lynch - July 2019<br />&#8203;<br />This July,&nbsp;CAES&nbsp;collaborated&nbsp;with <a href="https://www.hteverywhere.com" target="_blank">here there and&nbsp;EVERYwhere&nbsp;(<span>htE</span>)</a>, a New York City based nonprofit,&nbsp;to&nbsp;share&nbsp;papermaking practices.&nbsp;<span>htE</span>&nbsp;<span>is</span>&nbsp;a repurposed goods platform that&nbsp;<span>provides</span>&nbsp;<span>survivors</span>&nbsp;of economic hardships, domestic abuse,&nbsp;<span>sexual</span>&nbsp;assault, and human trafficking with an&nbsp;<span>avenues</span>&nbsp;for creative expression.</font><br /><br /><span><span>This</span>&nbsp;CAES&nbsp;<span>created</span>&nbsp;<span>paper</span>&nbsp;<span>making</span>&nbsp;<span>workshop</span>&nbsp;titled "<span>Self-Love</span>&nbsp;Letters" was&nbsp;<span>specifically</span>&nbsp;designed for&nbsp;<span>participants</span>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<span>use</span>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<span>paper</span>&nbsp;<span>making</span>&nbsp;process as an&nbsp;<span>opportunity</span>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<span>self-</span><span>reflection</span>&nbsp;and to instill&nbsp;<span>practices</span>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<span>self-care</span>,&nbsp;compassion, and&nbsp;<span>self-love</span>.</span><span>&nbsp;The&nbsp;</span><span><span>participants</span>&nbsp;<span>discussed</span>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<span>circle</span>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<span>meaning</span>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<span>self-care</span>&nbsp;and helpful practices of&nbsp;<span>self-love</span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<span>care</span>&nbsp;that can be&nbsp;<span>incorporated</span>&nbsp;into the&nbsp;<span>daily</span>&nbsp;life.</span><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>This&nbsp;<span>discussion</span>&nbsp;was paired journaling and deeper self-reflection.<span>&nbsp;Hand-made p<span>aper</span>&nbsp;was then produced by recycling these journal entries and adding medicinal flower petals to the pulp mix to&nbsp;<span>create</span>&nbsp;a symbolic and energetically infused art object of&nbsp;<span>self-love</span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<span>compassion</span>.</span><br /><br /><font>This&nbsp;process&nbsp;displayed&nbsp;a material transformation&nbsp;using&nbsp;the recycled&nbsp;paper&nbsp;making&nbsp;process&nbsp;and&nbsp;participants&nbsp;left&nbsp;the workshop feeling fulfilled,&nbsp;confidant, and with an in hand reminder of the&nbsp;day&nbsp;shared together&nbsp;filled&nbsp;with&nbsp;love.<br /><br />SDGs in this activity:<br />#12 Responsible consumption and production; I fixed the boxes and made the working environment that would be inspiring for the kids but also easy to understand. "</em></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:justify;"><em>"I explained what we were going to do and why. My students thought it was really exciting to blend different papers and see the results of mixing various colours of paper."</em></div>  <div class="paragraph"><em>We tried with different amounts of paper in search for a good balance, so some sheets we made were thicker than others."</em></div>  <div class="paragraph"><em>"They were all very patient and careful when doing it but also meticulous. They were really eager to get it as a paper and some of them thought it was too beautiful to use it and wanted to frame it at home."</em></div>  <div class="paragraph"><em>"I couldn&rsquo;t find any good spots to hang them up in our classroom, so I improvised lying them down on towels and flipped them over during the day so they would dry evenly. That seemed to have worked out fine. It&rsquo;s not many but we sure did take time to figure it out and understand the process. I&rsquo;ll be working with another group of kids next year and they&rsquo;ll be younger. For example, sharing a&nbsp;</span><em style="color:rgb(129, 129, 129)">mate</em><span style="color:rgb(129, 129, 129)">&nbsp;with the students during the prelude to our first workshop and then extracting pigments from the same&nbsp;</span><em style="color:rgb(129, 129, 129)">mate</em><span style="color:rgb(129, 129, 129)">&nbsp;to make paint, served as a perfect example of the kind of work CAES aims to accomplish.&nbsp;</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(129, 129, 129)">Also valuable was the participation of Jorge, a local produce vendor on Blanco Encalada Ave. (three blocks from Zona Imaginaria) - Jorge saved us scraps such as onion skins and corn leaves, which made his store our most valuable source for fibers to make paper with. For the following assignment, using Vincent van Gogh&rsquo;s brown ink/ reed pen drawings as a springboard, we practiced the varied, linear markings rendered by this master artist.
